NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Early OVC showdowns are on the horizon for Belmont University women's track and field team this weekend at the Thundering Herd Invitational, hosted by Marshall University, January 24-25.
There will be athletes from 11 schools competing at this weekend's meet, including OVC foes Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, and Morehead State. Belmont will also face off against athletes from host-Marshall, Ohio, UNC Asheville, Western Kentucky, Winthrop, and Wright State.
The meet will begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the women's weight throw and triple jump and will conclude with the 5000m run at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault, followed by running events beginning approximately at Noon.
On the track, the Bruins will get an OVC Championship tune-up in several events while pushing runners to test themselves in longer distances. It will be a head-to-head battle in the 3000m with junior Halle Hausman (Johnson City, Tenn.) and freshman Katie Flaherty (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and several Eastern Kentucky runners facing off. In the 400m, junior Payton Barlow (White House, Tenn.) will get a preview race with competition from both Austin Peay and EKU in the same heat. Freshman Lily Hallum (Mason, Ohio) will vie in the mile.
Headlining the field events, sophomore Tyra Finkeldey (Old Saybrook, Conn.) will look to improve her pole vault mark while junior Jessica Mattsson (Tierp, Sweden) will see action in the shot put and weight throw.
