Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. - With North Alabama throwing a combined no-hitter, the Belmont baseball team fell short to the Lions 1-0 on Tuesday at Mike Lane Field.
Freshman Andy Bean led the pitching staff with three strikeouts in three innings pitched, senior Max Marcotte and junior Chandler Schultz each collecting two strikeouts.
North Alabama quickly got to work in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases after a single and two walks. Belmont, however, prevented any damage thanks to freshman Drew Lowry catching a line out to end the inning.
The Lions scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning following a walk and stolen base, coming up with an RBI double that drove in the only run of the game. North Alabama looked to extend its lead in the bottom of the sixth by getting a leadoff runner on first base, but Belmont forced a double play and a strikeout to end the inning.
After obtaining a double and a walk with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Belmont came up with another strikeout heading into the last inning. Senior Hagan Severance and advancing to second base off a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, putting the tying run in scoring position. The Lions, however, forced the Bruins into a fly out to end the inning.
Belmont returns to Rose Park on Friday, facing UNC Asheville in the first of a three-game series at 4 p.m.
