Box Score Nashville, Tenn.—Belmont University Women's Soccer falls 2-1 to Southeast Missouri State in OVC Championship quarterfinal.
A hard-fought match for the Bruins today at E.S. Rose Park. The first half remained scoreless as Belmont maintained majority of the possession. The Bruins lead the shot count in each half having five shots in the first and six shots in the second.
The Redhawks were the first to score on the pitch today. In the 46th minute of the match Kate Daus sent in a corner kick, received by Lauren Walker for the goal.
Belmont's energy rose as they were down 1-0 and countered quickly in the 57th minute of the match. Haley Poynter passed the ball to Sydney Cason outside of the eighteen. Cason ripped a laser shot past the Redhawks goalie to tie the match 1-1. This was Cason's first goal since the 2019 season.
At the end of regulation, the teams were tied 1-1 and headed into the Bruins fifth overtime competition of the season. Just under two minutes into overtime Morgan McCourt scored the game winning goal off of a corner kick.
The Bruins played with poise and energy not only today, but the entire season. A truly special group of women lead the Bruins to enter the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at the highest seed in program history.
"Across the board, the team was verbally, physically, and emotionally, they were committed. We saw their willingness to sacrifice to deny a shot, to win a tackle, to get the cross off, and make something happen. You felt and heard the energy from the everywhere today. We asked the players going onto the field to spark us to another level of energy." Head Coach Heather Henson on today's performance.
For seniors, Sydney Cason, Andrea Leitner, Erin Patterson, Rachel Vernon, Kayla Monis, Keely Cartrett, and Haley Poynter their soccer career as a Bruin has come to a finale. However, the impact they have made at Belmont University and the Bruin program will live on. Looking forward to next season the underclassmen have big shoes to fill.
"I told the newcomers you honor the seniors by going into training and continue to build upon the foundation the seniors have left. It has been a great season on and off the field for us, we have had a lot of heartache and joyful moments this season. I am very proud of how these ladies and staff have taken this journey together."
The Bruins finished the match with 11 shots, three saves, and two corner kicks to finish the match. A hard-fought battle on the pitch to day to wrap up a stellar season.
"We put a game plan together and the ladies executed that game plan. In the end that's all we can ask. You can see that from the statistics. We were just unlucky to get that ball in the back of the net."
