Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University baseball team dropped its mid-week contest to Austin Peay 5-4 on Tuesday at Rose Park.
The game will not be reflected in the Ohio Valley Conference standings and was treated as a regular season non-conference mid-week game.
Junior Jackson Campbell led the Bruins offensively with a season-high two hits, driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the process. Freshman Will Jenkins, graduate student Dusty Baird, junior Kyle Brennan led Belmont on the mound by recording a pair of strikeouts each.
Austin Peay struck first in the top of the first inning, scoring off a single through the left side of the field to give the Governors the early one-run lead. The pitcher's duel continued through the next five innings, with shutouts being poured across the board heading into the seventh inning.
The Governors got two runners on base, advancing the pair of runners into scoring position with two outs. Austin Peay hit a single through the right side of the field, driving home the two runners and extending the lead 3-0.
Belmont responded in the following half-inning, loading the bases with one out. Freshman Jack Rando cleared the bases with a double down the left field line, tying the game with a career-high three RBIs. Campbell gave the Bruins the lead in the next at-bat, hitting a double to drive home Rando to make it a 4-3 game.
Two doubles in the top of the eighth inning allowed Austin Peay to tie the game with one out, with a fielding error allowing the go-ahead run to score in the next at-bat. After holding Austin Peay down in the top of the ninth inning, Campbell hit a single and stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning. Austin Peay, however, forced Belmont into a two-out flyout to prevent the Belmont comeback and secure the win.
Belmont (20-25) travels to Eastern Kentucky for the final OVC road series of the regular season, with the first game of the series starting at 5 p.m. CST on Friday.
