Series Win On Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University baseball team clinched its final series of the season on Senior Day in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Morehead State at Rose Park, winning with its second consecutive walk-off, 6-5.

Morehead State clinched a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament by winning game two of the doubleheader 9-5.

Game One

After four consecutive shutout innings, Morehead State struck first in the top of the fifth inning. The Eagles hit into a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run and take an early 1-0 lead.

Belmont loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, where sophomore John Behrends drove in the tying run by drawing a hit by pitch. A single from junior Logan Jarvis scored two more runs while freshman Brodey Heaton hit a double to left field that pushed the Bruins in front 4-1.

Morehead State tied the score in the top of the eighth inning, taking the lead in the top of the ninth inning and was three outs away from clinching their OVC Tournament spot in game one. After loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Belmont worked its walk-off magic once again. Heaton hit a single up the middle that drove in both the tying and game-winning run, giving Belmont the series-clinching win and its second straight walk-off.

The Bruins had four players have a multi-hit outing, with Heaton leading the way with three RBIs. Freshman Andy Bean struck out seven batters in six innings pitched while sophomore Aaron Hubbell collected his second win of the season.

Game Two

Morehead State got on the board in the top of the first inning in game two, but Heaton picked up right where he left off. The Newburgh, Indiana native gave the Bruins the lead by driving in two runs with a single, with freshman Jack Rando extending the lead 3-1 with a fielder's choice RBI.

The Eagles, however, were quick to respond and retook the lead by scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. Morehead State added another run in the top of the third inning, moving ahead 5-3.

Scoring four more runs in the top of the sixth inning, Morehead State moved ahead by six runs. Another two-RBI single from Heaton, however, cut the Eagles' deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Heaton obtained his career-high in RBIs, Rando followed up with an RBI single later in the inning to make it a 9-6 game.

Making his final appearance in a Belmont uniform, junior Korey Bell tied a season-high three strikeouts in the top of the ninth inning to give the Bruins momentum heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Morehead State, however, took care of business defensively and came up with the win.
