NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Jalen Borders, Will Jenkins, and Kyle Brennan combined for a complete game shutout of Toledo on Sunday to hand the Belmont University baseball team their third straight win, securing a series win over the Rockets with a 3-0 triumph at E.S. Rose Park.
The win marks the second shutout in a row for the Bruin pitching staff, who blanked Toledo (1-3) in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, 5-0.
Over the four games against Toledo this weekend, Bruin pitchers allowed just five runs in 32 innings. After dropping the season opener on Friday night, the Bruins have now won three in a row.
Borders (W, 1-0) went a career-high six innings without allowing a run, recording four strikeouts without a walk to earn the win. Jenkins entered the game out of the bullpen to start the seventh and promptly retired six in a row with three punchouts.
Brennan (SV, 1) picked up his first save of the season with a clean ninth inning. The senior from Franklin, Tenn., now has 18 career saves, moving into a tie with Will Tucker (2001-04) for 4th on the all-time list.
The Bruins cracked the scoreboard in the third inning when Guy Lipscomb tripled with two outs down the right field line, scoring Jack Capobianco. Belmont (3-1) immediately made it a 2-0 game when John Behrends stepped in and drilled a single to right field, scoring Lipscomb.
In the fifth inning, Logan Jarvis cranked a 400-foot home run to left center, his first of the season, to give Belmont a 3-0 lead.
After Borders exited, Jenkins and Brennan retired nine Rockets in a row to seal the win.
Belmont will compete in their first weekday matchup of the season this Tuesday, welcoming Middle Tennessee State to E.S. Rose Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
