Day One Results
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Throwers Rebekah Stucker and Jessica Mattsson highlighted the Belmont University women's track and field team's Friday afternoon at Western Kentucky's Hilltopper Relays as the duo collected gold and silver finishes. Both also registered personal records and the Bruins got their weekend underway at the Charles M. Ruter Track and Field Complex in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Sophomore Stucker came within 3.75 inches of her school record in the shot put when she delivered a distance of 49-9 (15.16m) on her final attempt, winning the event among a field of 27 throwers. Senior Mattsson claimed second place among 32 total competitors in the hammer throw with a mark of 188 feet (57.31m) on her second attempt.
The pair also excelled in their secondary events of the day with Stucker setting a personal record and finishing fifth in the hammer throw with a launch of 175-5 (53.46m) on her third attempt. Mattsson threw for a personal-best distance of 39-4.5 (12.00m) on her opening attempt in the shot put, securing an eighth-place finish.
Sophomore Olivia Moyer also posted a top-10 finish in the shot put, placing seventh with a throw of 40-2.25 (12.25m) on her fifth attempt.
"The throws squad did very well today," commented assistant coach Joe Frye. "We were consistent and continued our season's upward trajectory. It's great to get low-key meets like this to build confidence with low-pressure situations."
In the long jump, freshman Samantha Woodson was a top-10 finisher with a leap of 16-0.5 (4.89m) on her first attempt. Her distance just one inch shy of her personal best.
Field events continue Saturday morning at WKU beginning with the discuss at 11 a.m. Running events for Belmont will start at 1 p.m. with the 100m hurdles and the Bruins will also compete in the 400m, pole vault, 400m hurdles, 200m and javelin on day two.
