Baseball Prepares For Weekend Series Against Southern Illinois

This Weekend Determines if Bruins Make MVC Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- With the postseason race tightening and every conference game carrying major implications, Belmont prepares this weekend for a critical Missouri Valley Conference series against Southern Illinois at E.S. Rose Park.

The Bruins enter the weekend 19-29 overall and 9-9 in MVC play, currently sitting tied for the sixth spot in the conference standings as the regular season enters its final stretch. With only two conference series remaining, Belmont is firmly in the fight for a spot in the 2026 MVC Baseball Championship, making this weekend one of the most important series of the year.

The top six teams qualify for the conference tournament, and Belmont finds itself at the bottom of a tightly packed standings race where a single series could dramatically shift postseason positioning. A strong weekend against Southern Illinois would not only strengthen Belmont's tournament chances but could also provide separation heading into the final week of conference play.

The Bruins enter the series with momentum after one of their most thrilling wins of the season, a dramatic 12-11 walk-off victory over Bradley last Sunday. Belmont erased an 11-run Bradley inning and rallied late before Mike Sprockett delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. The comeback showcased the resilience and offensive firepower that Belmont has displayed throughout conference play.

Offensively, the Bruins continue to be led by one of the most productive top halves of the lineup in the MVC.

Charlie Davis has been one of Belmont's most consistent hitters all season, batting .345 with 69 hits, 15 doubles, six home runs, and 36 RBI. Davis also leads the team in runs scored and continues to provide energy at the top of the lineup.

Landon Godsey has emerged as one of Belmont's biggest offensive threats, hitting .306 with 17 doubles, nine home runs, and a team-high 40 RBI. Godsey was dominant in Belmont's series finale against Bradley, driving in four runs and delivering multiple clutch hits during the comeback victory.

Jake Maddox has also been a steady presence in the middle of the order, batting .296 with 14 doubles, seven home runs, and 32 RBI, while Cavan McMeans continues to contribute offensively and defensively with 52 hits and 30 RBI on the season.

As a team, Belmont is batting .265 with 55 home runs, 5 shy of tying last seasons' total and 254 RBI while averaging over five runs per game. The Bruins have also shown the ability to generate offense throughout the lineup, with seven regular starters recording at least 20 RBI this season.

On the mound, Belmont will look for continued production from a pitching staff that has shown flashes of dominance throughout the year. Zane Brown has been stout on the mound the past two weeks for the Bruins tossing 15 total innings, allowing 6 hits, 15 strikeouts and 0 runs.

The Bruins will likely lean heavily on both their bullpen depth and timely hitting during the series, especially against a Southern Illinois team fighting for positioning in the conference standings as well.
