Box Score 2 MURRAY, Ky. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (5-5-1, 1-1-1 OVC) used a dramatic second half rally to earn its first OVC victory on Friday afternoon. The Bruins defeated Murray State (3-8, 1-3 OVC) on the road, 2-1, to improve to 1-1-1 in conference standings.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Bruins came back firing in the second stanza. With barely 15 minutes ticked off the clock, Belmont tallied seven shots, compared to just one by Murray State. BU continued its relentless attack on the Racer goal until finding the back of the net in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Allie Hicks (Carmel, Ind.) fired a shot from 30 yards out to net her second goal of the season and knot the score at 1-1.
Determined not to see another contest pushed into extra minutes, BU hunked down again and began its hunt for the gamewinner. The Bruins turned up the heat in the 77th minute and just 60 seconds later found the back of the net for the second time on the day. Sophomore Kim Elmore (Salem, Va.) passed the ball to junior Amy Jo Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.), who slipped the ball past MSU goalkeeper Latisha Stevenson. Ahead two goals to one, the Bruins remained aggressive on both sides of the ball en route to their victory by the same score.
Belmont held the advantage in shots, 18-9, and corner kicks, 4-3.
Sophomore Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) led the Bruins with a match-high five shots, while Elmore tallied four shots. Hicks and classmate Rachel Schmidt (Dallas, Texas) finished with three shots apiece.
Junior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) went the distance between the posts, collecting two saves.
Belmont returns to action on Sunday at in-state rival Austin Peay. Match time is set for 2 p.m. The contest can be seen live on the OVC Digital Network and live stats will also be available.
