Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's soccer team (7-8-2, 5-4-1 OVC) sent its seniors off in fine fashion extended its win streak to three games with a strong performance that held to a 2-0 win over visiting Tennessee Tech (3-15-1, 1-8-1 OVC) on Friday night.
The Bruins dominated time of possession and controlled the tempo from the opening whistle. Sophomore Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) was on fire in the first four and half minutes, notching three consecutive shots on goal that put TTU netminder Jordan Brown to work early. Belmont ramped up a collective attack on both sides of the ball that left Tennessee Tech reeling. It would not be until nearly 16 minutes had ticked off the clock that the Golden Eagles would be able to string together some offensive movement on BU's half of the field.
Belmont was able to get on the scoreboard in the 29th minute of action when junior Taylor Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) used a cross from sophomore Emily Epley (Goshen, Ky.) to find the back of the net for what would become the gamewinner. Despite taking the lead, BU did not let up and even with one second remaining on the clock before the teams headed to the locker rooms, sophomore Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) fired a shot that skimmed the outside of the left post.
BU maintained its high level of assertive and smart play on both sides of the ball to open the second half. The Bruins wasted little time, maneuvering to find the back of the net just 10 minutes in. Junior Meredith Martin (Franklin, Tenn.) headed in BU's insurance goal at the 54:05 mark off a rebound by Blase.
For the remainder of regulation, the Bruins used a rotation of fresh legs to maintain control and dominate ball possession. Down the stretch, Belmont continued to test the TTU goalkeeper, who ended the night with 13 saves, cruising to the 2-0 victory.
"It was a great game tonight- a great game for our seniors and to end the season," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "The players wanted to end the season on a high note and show their progression throughout the season.
"Huge teamwork tonight, especially on the goals. They put it all together as a team."
The Bruins dominated in shots, 24-2, and corner kicks, 6-2.
Blase notched seven shots to lead the Bruins. Senior Amy Jo Anderson (Birmingham, Ala.) recorded five shots and freshman Meg Howard (Brentwood, Tenn.) picked up three.
Senior Nicole Berner (Randolph, N.J.) went the distance between the posts, grabbing two saves.
The Bruins finish their 2013 campaign with a 7-8-2 overall record and a 5-4-1 mark for its second season in the Ohio Valley Conference.
