Think Pink

Nashville, Tenn. -- Belmont University Women's Soccer hosts their tenth annual Think Pink game on Thursday, October 7 against Murray State.

This game holds significant meaning to Head Coach Heather Henson as both her sister and former Belmont Women's Basketball coach, Betty Wiseman, fought and beat breast cancer. Henson described this game as a chance to bring awareness and extend support to the greater community that Belmont offers. "This is what this family can do for every breast cancer survivor or breast cancer fighter." Henson explained.

"It's not a heartbreaking story, it's actually an awesome story." Henson noted about her sister's journey. Henson describes the shock that herself and her family felt finding out her sister was diagnosed with Stage One Breast Cancer. "It became real, a lot of people just hear the statistics. I always attended all these fundraisers, but I never knew anybody." Her sister was diagnosed with Stage One Breast cancer, she went through eight weeks of radiation, and endured a mastectomy, "luckily that's all she had to do."

Henson soon after found out that Betty Wiseman had also been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. "I knew Betty Wiseman was here and she could help be a part of that day. She has helped me to grow it by having a visual person here, and she has such strong faith. This game is more than a game it means everything to my sister, Betty Wiseman, and myself. She was an integral part of this game and helped me realize how amazing Belmont is. She was really amazing in this journey with us, and she doesn't even realize how much, just being that visual person for us to represent everyone else who went through the journey she went through."

Henson also described the impact these experiences had on her team culture, "Through those experiences it helped us create a deeper level to open the door between coach and players to be vulnerable. It's okay to not be okay. Life happens, and we live it together."

Coach Henson made the Think Pink game an integral part of the season since the very beginning of her coaching career at Belmont. Henson challenged her entire team, coaches, and staff included to donate to find a cure no matter the dollar amount. The goal is to have one hundred percent of the team family donate. "It is so impactful to do our part to be the change."
