Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Belmont University women's soccer team drew to a double overtime draw to SIUE 1-1 on Friday at Korte Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Doyle registered a career-high 11 saves, the first time a Belmont goalkeeper recorded double-digit saves since Nov. 16, 2019 (Lily Herman, 12 at No. 2 North Carolina). SIUE fired 26 shots on Friday while five of Belmont's six shots were on frame.
With Belmont attacking early, the Bruins' defense did not allow a shot to SIUE in the first 10 minutes of the match. After SIUE prevented a shot opportunity off a Belmont corner kick in the 12th minute, Doyle collected two saves to keep the match scoreless.
After 37 minutes of scoreless play, the Bruins struck first. Sophomore midfielder Avery Nowak kicked a pass to senior forward Julie Garst, who knocked it in the back of the net to give Belmont a 1-0 lead. The goal was Garst's 21st career goal, putting her in a tie with Annie Musacchio (2006-09) for fourth on the program's career goals list. She needs just one more goal to tie Cristin Czubik (1998-01) and Belicia Mendiola (2014-17) for second on the list.
The goal also gave Garst 50 career points, moving her into a tie with Musacchio for fourth on the program's career points list. She needs 10 more points to move into a tie for third with Mendiola on the list.
Going into the locker room with the lead, Doyle kept the Bruins in front by snatching three saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half. SIUE kept attacking, but the Belmont defense forced the Cougars to miss the goal on all of their shot attempts with under 10 minutes to play.
SIUE looked to capitalize off a corner kick in the 85th minute, floating a ball on the foot of an SIUE attacker. However, junior forward Erin Patterson deflected the ball out of the Cougars' attack that allowed the Bruins to stay in front.
With just over two minutes left in the match, SIUE was able to collect a goal. Lily Schnieders fed Maria Haro for the score that tied the match 1-1 in the 87th minute.
Belmont fired an opening shot on goal two minutes into the first overtime, but SIUE goalkeeper Taylor Spiller collected the save. SIUE would fire five shots during the overtime periods, none of which reached the back of the net. The Bruins had a final opportunity in the second overtime, putting a shot on frame. Spiller, however, snagged the save and forced the Bruins into the 1-1 draw.
