DICKSON, Tenn. – Paced by individual medalist Evan Davis, the Belmont men's golf team captured the Murray State Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.
Holding a two stroke advantage over UT-Martin going into Tuesday's final round, the Bruins played consistent and maintained their lead throughout the round, posting a six-under par 282 to win the team title with a 54-hole mark of 844. UT-Martin finished three strokes back in second at 847, while Southern Illinois placed third at 854.
It is the first team title for the program since the President's Day Match Play Championship in February of 2019 and their score of 844 is tied for the fourth lowest 54-hole mark in the Division I era.
Senior Evan Davis had a record setting day as he earned his third career individual title. The Lexington, Kentucky native carded a four-under par 68 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 201 (-15). He finished seven shots ahead of Austin Peay's Michael Busser (208). His final round of 68 included four birdies and no bogeys (two birdies on the front and two on the back). Davis also tied the school record for lowest score in relation to par, joining Ashton Van Horne as the only Bruins to post a -15 score. In addition, his score of 201 is tied for the third lowest in the Division I era.
Three other Bruins finished among the top-15 at the tournament. Senior Jack Uselton posted his first top-10 finish of the season as he tied for 10th place with a score of 213. He carded an even par 72 in final round.
Freshman Reeve Felner bounced back from a disappointing second round and shot a three-under par 69 to finish tied for 12th place at 215. He had five birdies and just two bogeys in his final round on Tuesday. It is third top-20 finish of the spring season.
Junior Coleman Jones tied for 15th place with a three round score of 216. He shot a final round 74 on Tuesday. It is his second top-20 finish of the season.
Sophomore Luke Whitney finished in a tie for 48th place at 225. He carded a one-over par 73 in Tuesday's finale.
Davis and LaRue were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Two other Belmont golfers competed as individuals. Senior Bogle LaRue had a tremendous final round. He shot the best round of the day, a six-under 66, to finish in a tie for fourth at 210. It was his highest finish as a Bruin and his first top-five showing. The other individual, sophomore Jack Bergstrom, tied for 60th place at 230.
