ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Women's cross country graduate student Brooke Garter has been named a recipient of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award, as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon. Garter, a dedicated student-athlete and active volunteer in the Nashville community, exemplifies excellence both on and off the course.
A native of Kings Mills, Ohio, Garter has maintained a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average while majoring in secondary education and mathematics. She is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Teacher Leadership. Recently, she was also named to the 2024 MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Team.
Since 2020, Garter has volunteered at Church of the City, serving in the "crawlers room" during services. From 2022 to 2023, she volunteered with Young Life Capernaum every other Monday, sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with students with disabilities. Additionally, she has tutored middle and high school students in math through Brightplace Tutoring and the Family Wellbeing Center.
This season, Garter has proven to be a reliable leader for the Bruins. She finished first overall at the Belmont Opener and placed 11th at the Southern Showcase, where she broke the previous 5K school record, set by Keely Weaver Corlew in 2001, alongside teammate Rachel Soukup. She went on to achieve a personal best in the 5K with a time of 16:57.9 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Most recently, Garter finished eighth at the MVC Championships.
Commissioner Jeff Jackson named twelve student-athletes across the MVC as State Farm Good Neighbor honorees for the 2024 fall season.Â
In order to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport during the season of recognition. The Valley recognizes 12 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, and spring) for a total of 36 honorees throughout the academic year. MVC member institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.
