Belmont Track & Field and Cross Country Announces Staff Additions

Graduate Assistant Coach Jalen Tate and Distance Assistants Brodey Hasty and Grant O’Callaghan Join Bruins’ Coaching Staff

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jeff Langdon has announced the additions of Jalen Tate, Brodey Hasty and Grant O'Callaghan to the Bruins' coaching staff. Tate will serve as Belmont's newest graduate assistant coach, working with the Bruins' sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers alongside associate track and field head coach Cameron Harvey. Hasty will serve as a men's distance assistant working alongside coach Langdon, while O'Callaghan will serve as a women's distance assistant working alongside assistant cross country and track and field coach Hannah Brookover.

All three bring a wealth of knowledge in their respective disciplines as highly accomplished athletes.

A native of Clarksville, Tennessee, Tate was an All-American at the University of Tennessee and has been coaching high school track and field in his hometown. A 2022 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finalist in the triple jump, Tate was a three-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America Second Team performer. He claimed All-Southeastern Conference Second Team honors and earned bronze in the triple jump at the 2019 SEC Outdoor Championships.

Tate starred at West Creek High School where he was a 2017 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) state champion in the triple jump and still holds the school's long jump and triple jump records. In the triple jump, Tate holds a personal best of 16.51m (54 feet, 2 inches) and his long jump personal record is 7.79m (25 feet, 6.75 inches).

As an assistant coach for the girls track and field team at Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tate has coached five athletes to the TSSAA State Championships in two years. He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Tennessee in 2022.

"Jalen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program," commented coach Harvey. "As a former national qualifier, All-American and professional athlete, he will be able to expose our athletes to the level of work and focus it takes to reach the highest levels of track and field."

The top cross country runner in the nation during his prep career, Hasty was a standout locally at Brentwood High School before becoming an All-American at distance national power Northern Arizona. Originally from Salem, Utah, Hasty was a three-time USTFCCCA All-American in cross country and earned All-America Second Team honors in outdoor track and field in the 5000m. He finished 25th at the NCAA Cross Country National Championship race his last two seasons and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finals twice in the 5000m, placing 14th in 2024.

"Brodey brings a lot of youthful energy and national championship experience to the program," spoke coach Langdon. "He has competed successfully at the highest level in both cross country and track and has been a part of three national championship teams at Northern Arizona."

Hasty won a team national championship in three of his final four seasons as a Lumberjack. In cross country, Hasty owns a personal best 8K time of 23:14.3 and 10K time of 28:17.8. On the track, Hasty's 5000m personal record is 13:37.10 indoors and 13:39.73 outdoors.

Winning a combined six individual state titles in cross country and track in high school, Hasty ran the third-fastest indoor varsity mile of all time (4:00.05) and won a pair of national titles in the 2 mile. He also placed third at Nike Cross Nationals after winning the NXN Southeast Regional.

Graduating with his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Northern Arizona in May of 2023, Hasty remained in Flagstaff, Arizona, and earned his master's degree in educational leadership and administration in May of 2024.

Concluding his collegiate career at nearby rival Lipscomb, O'Callaghan spent five years at Southeastern Louisiana where he ran both cross country and track. A five-time Southland Conference medalist in indoor and outdoor track, O'Callaghan secured All-Southland First Team honors at the 2020-21 Southland Cross Country Championship race after posting a fifth-place finish. Winning gold in the distance medley relay at the 2020 Southland Indoor Championships, O'Callaghan was a silver medalist in the 3000m. At the 2018 Southland Outdoor Championships, O'Callaghan captured silver in the 1500m, and he was a two-time top-10 finisher at the Southland Cross Country Championship.

As a graduate transfer on the opposite end of Belmont Boulevard, O'Callaghan put a bow on his cross country career by becoming the third Bison to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country National Championship race. He placed 10th at the 2021 NCAA South Regional Cross Country Championship with a personal best 10K time of 29:48.7. Collecting Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) All-Louisiana Track and Field Team accolades while at Southeastern Louisiana, O'Callaghan holds an indoor 5000m personal record of 14:42.76 and an 8K personal record of 23:45.2.

A native of Flowery Branch, Georgia, O'Callaghan helped lead Flowery Branch High School to a state championship.

Regularly appearing on the Southland Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll, O'Callaghan received a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in exercise physiology from Southeastern Louisiana in May of 2021.
