The longest tenured president in Belmont history, Dr. Gabhart served in that role from 1959 until 1982. Dr. Gabhart's influence on Belmont athletics is undeniable. He helped Betty Wiseman establish the first collegiate women's basketball program in the state of Tennessee in 1968 as well as providing the athletic department with its first full-time coaches.

Dr. Gabhart will also be remembered as one of Belmont's most fervent supporters after being a fixture at basketball games for many years. He has published 12 books and written 421 columns for the Nashville Banner. An extensive traveler, Dr. Gabhart has conducted tours around the world to more than 26 countries.

Dr. Gabhart graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1934 and was awarded his Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1943.

He maintained his role as chancellor until his passing in 2009.
