Mark Dennis’ efforts at Belmont University helped the Bruins field its first cross country and track team. Recruited as a basketball player in 1976, the two-sport athlete wanted to continue running and teamed up with fellow Ohio native Dave Young to start the program. After his days as a student concluded, Dave led the way as head coach for the cross country and track teams.
Dennis would become Belmont’s first All-American runner and set the bar for all future greats in the program. He won the District 24 Cross Country Championship as a junior. In addition, he was a three-time All-District performer.
Friends describe Dennis as blessed with amazing speed and endurance, as well as a strong will to win. He will always be remembered as a pioneer in the foundation of cross country and track at Belmont.
